Frequently asked questions
What do I need to wear?

The Big Swing is an outdoor adventure playground and we expect that visitors will get a bit messy. Children will naturally want to explore and may want to take part in activities such as den building, camp fire building or painting. These activities may cause damage to clothing or get them dirty.

We recommend children and young people visit the playgroud wearing old, playing out clothes. We advise children and young people to also wear sturdy shoes.

Always dress for the weather and be prepared. If your child is attending for the full session then please make sure that they wear the appropriate sun protection or have spare cream with them.

What do I need to bring?

You don't need to bring anything with you to play. We advise that if you are coming to play for the full session that you bring a packed lunch. We do have a tuck shop onsite that is stocked regularly with snacks and drinks for a small cost. We also have free fruit available. Tuck shop opens once an hour, on the hour.

Whilst we advise you keep valuables at home some children and young people do choose to bring personal items such as mobile phones with them. Please be aware that there is no secure storage on site, and if you bring a bike or scooter you should bring a lock with you.

Eccleshill Adventure Playground cannot be held responsible for the loss, theft or damage to personal items.

Can parents stay?

When visiting the playground parents have the choice to stay with their children whilst they play. At least 3 qualified playworkers are on site at all times during play sessions and are fully trained in First Aid, Health and Safety and Safeguarding.

PLEASE BE AWARE: Children under the age of 5 years must be accompanied by an adult above the age of 18, and cannot be left by that adult.

WE ARE NOT A CARE SCHEME: We operate on an open access basis and therefore we cannot stop children from leaving the playground.

Where do I park?

You will find space to park along the path at the playground's entrance. We ask that during session times you do not drive into the playground.

What about the rain?

As an outdoor adventure playground we acknowledge that children and young people play out in all weathers. We advise that children bring a coat with them when they visit, just incase it begins to rain or your child gets cold.

We do have a small indoor, eco friendly space called The Hobbit House. This indoor space allows visitors to escape from the rain & cold, and use our indoor equipment; pool table, piano and our arts and crafts activties. We cannot guarantee that this space will always be open.

Photos/Videos.

Playground staff regularly take photos and videos of the children using our play equipment. This is a perfect way for us to evidence the great work that we do. We use these images on our social media sites and for our publicity.

If you would prefer for your child not to have their photograph taken, then please make a staff member aware on arrival and state this on their registration form.

Accessible Facilities.

At The Big Swing we are able to adapt the play space in ways that a child or a young person with additional needs may require.

We have specialist, accessible attachments for two of our main fixtures. These are accesible seats for both of our swing and zip wire. We also have a fully fitted accessible toilet. Around the site there are newly fitted hand rails to offer support to those with additional mobility needs.

Please see a member of staff upon arrival if you require any assistance.

Is smoking allowed?

The Big Swing Adventure Playground is a no smoking site. If you must smoke, please do so outside the gate.

Why do I need to sign in/register?

When arriving at the playground a member of staff will ask to sign your child in. We will ask for your child's name, their age & date of birth, their school, the first part of their postcode and their ethnicity. As we are a charity we get money from different sources and as such have to provide reports for funders who want to know information. This can include 'what percentage of children are from the BD10 area?'.

If your child becomes a regular attendee, we ask that your child fills out a registeration form, which will be kept inside the office at all times. A registration form allows us to collect details and information about allergies, special requirements and also contact details. Gathering this information ensures that a parent or guardian is contactable at all times.

All of the information we collect is stored under our data protection policy and will not be shared unless neccesary. Collecting this information is a vital part of keeping us open.

You do not need to sign out when leaving The Big Swing Adventure Playground.

Are pets allowed?

The Big Swing Adventure Playground kindly asks that you leave your pets outside of the playground. Some of our attendees may have a fear of animals and may be illergic. Also, the playground can be a very busy, loud and unpredictable environment which could be distressing for animals.

Do I have to pay?

Our after school, open access sessions are free of charge.

We do have a tuck shop on site that is stocked regularly with snacks and drinks for a small cost. We also have free fruit available when stocks last.

Do I have to book?

If you are interested in attending during our open access sessions then you are not required to book. We advise that large groups attending with over 10 children do ring in advance.

Please be aware that our open access sessions are open to members of the public, and therefore the playground may be very busy when you attend. If you are interested in hiring out the playground to avoid this, then click the 'booking' page above.
